I bought an Epson USB scanner but am unable to use it. If I switch on the scanner and then the computer I get a DOS message stating 'Windows Security Error - please restart your computer'. Either that or Windows starts to load, then gives me the error 'Windows has performed an illegal operation'. Switching on the scanner after Windows has loaded causes the computer to crash. If I plug in my printer to the USB port I get the same problem.
Epson says the fault is a Microsoft software problem and I should contact my computer manufacturer. However, I upgraded my computer five months ago and everything except the case, the floppy drive and the Windows 98 CD-ROM is new. Do you think the problem is the version of Windows I am using?

It's impossible to be sure, since a hardware fault might be causing the problem, but it is certainly a likely explanation. Your motherboard and processor are newer than the version of Windows you are running. It's possible your hardware isn't properly supported by this old version of Windows. Installing a current version of Windows will resolve that issue and hopefully solve the problem. But before you do that it might be worth trying to update the USB controller drivers from Windows Update via Device Manager.
